After purchasing a travel watercolor kit (which is quite adorable) and then promptly treating myself to a goopy mound of peanut m&m & nutella ice cream treat, I skipped back home feeling particularly good that evening. As I proceeded to unlock the door, some blurry little something entered my peripheral. I turned my head to focus and, of course, it had to be a plump and rather whorish spider. I leaped back and sized up the pest. It was about the size of a quarter with it's rump most prominent and rotund. My only weapon were menus stuffed in the railing. After failing to accurately toss them at the target numerous times and with my ability to be cool to passersby waning, I knew I had to formulate a new plan.

He had climbed up his thread as I tossed menus at him and while he was huddled there, I wondered if I had successfully unlocked both of the locks on the door. I gave it a nudge with my foot. Success! It opened! And so fell that bastard down midway to the floor.
Oh? He's challenging me?!

Again with the menus. As the papers float down so carelessly, a stark contrast to the seriousness of the situation, one touched his delicate silk line. It startled him and he raced up the line and huddled himself in to a disgusting ball of bloated filth and legs yet again.
Could I make it in? Could I pass through the doorway faster than he could bungee? I focused and anticipated then ultimately lost my nerve.
Menus - again!
He curls up tighter. His swollen abdomen so nauseating I clench my teeth at it and run slamming the door behind me!

Just how many doors slammed in all of his 8 eye'd face?!
Not nearly enough!

Relief lasts only seconds because I was quickly consumed by the skeevey dance. It in turn made me feel so tribal and made me wonder if this dance is universal? Would my movements be recognized by the hominids or neanderthals?

Clearly this experience left me with much to ponder, but what I ponder mostly, is just how many deaths or serious injuries a year result in the frantic actions of a desperate victim trying to escape the terror of some insect or buggish thing?

I applied for Art Star and anxiously awaited for the application deadline to see if I would receive that e-mail announcing my acceptance.
Nothing.
I don't know why I was so hung-up on this particular craft fair. I went to it last year before my shoppe was even in acceptable shape, and I suppose I made it a sort of goal to do it this year.
Anyway, about a week after the announcement e-mail went out, I received a call from Megan letting me know that I had been accepted but their e-mails to me all bounced back.
Doofus made a typo on the application. So, I'm in and I'm very much looking forward to it.

I have not mentioned this before, but there is also a cute little store in Nashville Tennessee called Bella Aeris that I am consigning a couple prints with.

My website is coming along slowly. I started from scratch, which I usually don't have to do. I can usually recycle some code from the previous layout. But I wanted something totally different this time, so I trashed it all. I also ditched the massive galleries I have used in the past, and traded them for small yet fancy javascript galleries.

I am slowly saving up for a macro lens, I am about half way there, but I am dying. I haven't even settled on a lens yet, I am considering renting a couple of options before purchasing. Why didn't I start saving immediately after I got the camera? This agony could be over with already.

I am also planning on redesigning that website of mine. I am set with the layout, but I am completely stuck on the graphics. This I don't understand. Graphics have always been the easy part. Usually they come first and dictate the layout. It is incredibly unnerving for me :/

Trying to build up stock for December. I always get the worst pains in my neck and back while working on things. I can only work for about an hour before the pain forces me to quit. So some of these things aren't completely finished, but they will have to wait for another night.

I finally made an effort to update my website. I have been thinking of new designs for it as well. I'm sure I won't get to redesigning it for a few months though.

I started working on some new clay creatures. One is a squid mermaid! I won't share until I have completed more of her though. Tentacle is ready for the second part of mold-making. If the craft stores around here weren't so completely shitty and useless, I would be able to get to it, instead of having to order everything online.
It really gets my goiter!
I did make this little lovely:

Her sadness is undeniable!
That is not painted. It is my terrible baking skills that turned her those colors. But, I rather like it, and I'll probably paint her in a similar way.

I'm also preparing a larger Soot beastie, and messing around with white wool. Perhaps the white beasties will be Smogs.
I bought some felting needles today,(successfully bled myself with them too) and experimented with making felted Soots. I don't think I care for the felted ones alone, they are not sturdy enough. I like the clay innards, a light breeze won't send them toppling over. So I'm going to try felting, with clay innards.

There is more to relay, but that is all the reporting I can muster for this evening.

We have whining fights every so often. Tonight, I want ice cream and he wants juice but neither of us are willing to tear ourselves away from our computers and walk or drive our lazy asses down the street. So we will continue to yelp "I want ice cream!" or "I want juice" at each other repeatedly for the evening.

I have completed an application for a craft show in December. I am most nervous about this, and I don't think I can wait until October to find out if I was accepted. I am going to begin making right away. I have to make a sign, table cloth, and displays also. With all of this preparation, it will be quite a blow to find out I won't be a vendor. I am, however, long over-due for skin thickenin'.

How'd you like one of those beauties decorating the folds of your wallet? I got 250 of 'em for $2.00 (had to pay for those elegant rounded corners). Now it's to gettin' rid of 'em anywhere.

I was in the bookstore today buyin' some books, and I happened upon this little book titled I'm Not Hanging Noodles On Your Ears. It's a compilation of idioms from different languages and it's fantastic! I have found that I thoroughly enjoy books about words and language. Last year I borrowed a book from the library titled, There's a Word for It: A Grandiloquent Guide to Life. After reading it, I made a short list of definitions for words that I cannot seem to locate. Does that make sense? I mean, I've searched for words that seemingly don't exist, but they must exist - there's a word for everything. I've held off e-mailing them to the author in fear that my list might be laughable to him.

Weekend Tasks

I made a list of things I wanted to get done this weekend. I am some sort of chronic list maker. My bag is filled with lists written on tiny papers and folded up. My old desk was scattered with lists upon lists. Some were duplicates and some were triplicates. Anyway, I lost the list I wrote on Friday, but I still managed to get a lot done.

Tom had brought home this wonderfully ridiculous chair from work a few weeks ago.

It was dirty as hell, but quite comfortable! It required some primping so we headed for the fabric store. Here is what it looks like after some reupholstering and spray paint:

While at the fabric store I finally caved and bought a brand new sewing machine. I was hoping to acquire one for super cheap but it was on sale for $100 so I decided to do it. I played with it today, and successfully sewed myself a little pouch. It's very exciting.

I also finished some clay earrings and a pin I had started earlier. I baked about 6 others tonight, but I will probably save the painting of those for another day.

It's really bugging me that I lost that list. I know I was supposed to work on the tentacle which I somehow forgot - probably due to all the excitement over the sewing machine. I suppose I'll just have to write a new list. For now though, I am going to work on adding color to my gilled thing. Here is what I did so far this morning:

It took me over an hour, but I went through much of my photos and deleted 8 gigs tonight. That's a lot of damn pictures! I have 5 gigs on another drive that I will get to eventually. While sorting through all of those files, I found that I really do have a thing for peacocks. I'm quite envious of their plummage...

Jewelry is not something I ever really cared for making, but I find myself coming up with lots ideas for some lately. I hardly wear jewelry, even though I really like it. Especially gaudy costume jewelry.

I've made 4 of those brooches so far, and painted each one just slightly different but this one I am most satisfied with. You might not be able to tell from the photo, but there is some brown in it, to make it seem more like vintage pewter.

I really like the dog and crown on it:

The other painted piece in the top photo I think I'll make into a pin as it is just a little bit too large for a ring. The other two tinier pieces are just smaller versions of it, and I think I will make those into rings as well as pins.
I tried to make a tentacle sucker ring out of sculpey before, and it snapped fairly easily so I think I'll opt for some ring bases this time.

Some Newness

I've made many changes in the past week to that Shoppe of mine in the way of prices and offerings.

I've added magnets,prints on watercolor paper, and prints on photo paper that has a lovely pearlescent surface. The giclees on watercolor paper are so nice. You can hardly tell the difference between the original and the print.

I also made a logo :)

Once I get everything listed, I'm going to try and force myself to get that tentacle done. I was foolishly under the impression that the clay I chose for the shell part of the mold wasn't going to require any mold release. And once that crap hardened it was quite apparent that I did in fact need it. So in my desperation to salvage my tentacle, I sawed it with a dremel, sliced it with a box cutter, and picked at it with a paint scraper. The end result was a missing sucker, chipped textures, and a goddamn incision about an inch long in the side. By the end of the ordeal I was wounded and disheartened. I have snubbed it for over a month and I think it's high time I repair it and finish it.

On another note, so far this month my work has laid off 8 people. This leaves only a handful of us left and with the most recent layoff being just yesterday, i suspect that I've propbably got 2 weeks at most left. Working at this place has been strange from the beginning, and I'm curious to see how it will end.

All of our things are in boxes so there has not been any opportunitities for making. Its rather awful! I finished the tentacle before we moved and covered it in many layers of latex to begin on the mold. I am quite anxious to finish it.
I did, however, sell one of those little Soots to a kind lady recently, and that lovely magazine CRAFT posted my antlers. You might peep that here.

We've decided to make our bar a Pirate bar, and although that alone is very exciting, I am most excited about making barnacle lights for it, and perhaps urchin lanterns!

You know how excited I am about these baby snails. Another pod hatched, so now we have double time babies. The older ones are getting to be so big...

We also hatched 3 tadpole shrimps. When the last batch died, we let the water evaporate (as instructed by our instructions), then filled the tank back up and waited. I was very very doubtful that anything could rise from such muck, but to my surprise, they hatched rather quickly. It was a glorious discovery. They've already grown egg sacks too!

It seems we are very good breeders!

A few weeks ago, we went to the park so that I might collect moss and whatnot for a terrarium. A terrarium turned into four terrariums, but they are all very lovely! I have plans for others which involve succulents. Those terrarium things are really really fun, but this is not my story! I brought my camera to the park, of course, and I am grateful that I did for we were greeted by this stupid, awful creature I shall call Squirts.

I will certainly give her color. I am foolish and drew these on bristol board rather than water color paper, so I must be extra cautious or I'll ruin them like I did with my deep-sea whale fish:

I dislike the way this one turned out, but I think I will recreate it in Photoshop some day. Then I will give it lovely papyrus texture.

You should know about our gilled playthings. Especially, you should know about our recent gilled hatchlings!

Since the pods were deposited nearly a month ago, we had lost hope of any birthing. I suppose it takes about 3- 4 weeks for those tiny shells to harden enough to hit the streets, but I felt certain they had all became aborts. Today even, I secretly schemed to steal those pods and have a look see 'neath the microscope. I was distracted though, by promises of walks along poo ridden docks. And so it was not until we returned, hours later, with fresh flakes for fish feasting, that I noticed babies.

They are small! They are scarcely larger than the water's meniscus!! My camera's eye is not so precise as to take in the fine details of such small creatures, but this will serve as a sample:

I've become obsessed with Etsy. I've been making lots of things, but they're all prototypes - not good enough for sale. I'm sort of overwhelmed with ideas and things I want to make. Of course, it would have been smart for me to do all this prep before I started the shoppe, but I rarely think so far ahead!

I started on this thing so long ago, and it's no surprise it sat about collecting dust for months. I'm trying to be productive instead of being angry.

I'm nearly finished with the inner textures and then I will start on those rows of suckers. In it's final form, it will be one half of a pair of book ends that shall be replicated infinitely and sold on etsy. Won't that be splendid?
